Remember Dec. 7th! – Allen Saalburg (1942) – Patriotic WWII Poster Print

Created in 1942 by commercial artist and illustrator Allen Saalburg, “Remember Dec. 7th!” was produced shortly after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, which brought the United States into World War II. The poster became part of the broader wartime propaganda campaign aimed at maintaining national unity, encouraging sacrifice, and sustaining public determination throughout the war.

The composition centers on a torn and battered American flag hanging against a backdrop of smoke and darkness, accompanied by the solemn line adapted from Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address: “…we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain…” The imagery transforms the flag into both a memorial and a rallying symbol, connecting the shock of Pearl Harbor to themes of sacrifice, endurance, and patriotic duty.

Allen Saalburg was known for dramatic wartime imagery, and this poster reflects his skill at combining emotional symbolism with striking visual simplicity.
