Created in 1943 by the United States Office of War Information, “We Have Just Begun to Fight!” was designed to rally American morale during the height of World War II. The poster presents a dramatic charcoal-style depiction of an American soldier charging forward with rifle and bayonet raised, his expression filled with fury, determination, and resolve.
The text lists major battles and campaigns already endured by the United States and its Allies, including Pearl Harbor, Bataan, Midway, Guadalcanal, and Tunisia, emphasizing both sacrifice and momentum. Rather than portraying victory as already secured, the poster frames these events as merely the opening phase of a much larger struggle still ahead.
The stark black-and-white illustration, contrasted with bold red lettering, gives the poster an urgent and confrontational tone. Its rough, sketch-like rendering evokes immediacy and emotional intensity, making the soldier appear less like a polished heroic symbol and more like a battle-hardened combatant emerging directly from the front lines.
