Man on Horseback – Richard Roland Holst (c. 1900) – Art Nouveau Canvas Print

Man on Horseback presents a dramatically stylized rider and horse in a composition built from bold, sweeping contours. The figures are reduced to powerful geometric forms, with the rider leaning forward in motion as the horse surges across the composition. The strong black-and-cream palette gives the scene an almost monumental quality.

Holst emphasizes line and silhouette rather than naturalistic detail. The horse’s powerful body, flowing mane, and curling tail are echoed by the sweeping forms of the rider’s clothing and the surrounding landscape, creating a sense of continuous movement. The stark contrast between black and white further heightens the graphic character of the work.

Created around 1900, Man on Horseback belongs to the transitional period when European decorative art was moving from Art Nouveau toward the more geometric visual language that would later define Art Deco. Its bold simplification and angular forms anticipate Deco, while its flowing contours and organic treatment of the horse retain a strong Art Nouveau character.
