Program of the Concertgebouw Amsterdam is a striking example of Richard Roland Holst’s graphic design work for the concert stage. Created for a 1921 concert in The Hague, the composition combines classical imagery with a strongly geometric framework, framing two illustrated scenes within an elaborate architectural design.
The two central panels draw on different aspects of classical culture: one depicts a dramatic mythological scene, while the other presents a musician playing a lyre. Around them, bold red, black, and cream forms create a highly structured composition of diamonds, bands, borders, and Greek key motifs. The result is both theatrical and distinctly modern.
Created during the early 1920s, the work demonstrates the transition toward the streamlined geometry that would become synonymous with Art Deco. Its combination of classical references, symmetrical structure, and bold decorative geometry makes it a particularly handsome example of Dutch Art Deco graphic design.
