This wonderfully unusual nineteenth-century advertisement turns the palm of an outstretched hand into an illustrated map of character and destiny. Lines, mounts, and finger shapes are carefully labeled with terms such as the “Line of Life,” “Line of Head,” “Mount of Venus,” and “Mount of Saturn,” presenting palmistry with the confident visual authority of a scientific diagram.
Produced as an advertisement for Robert Hamilton tobacco of Covington, Kentucky, the design combines commercial imagery with the Victorian fascination with fortune-telling, pseudoscience, and the study of human character. The dramatic black background, oversized typography, and meticulously rendered hand give the advertisement an especially striking graphic presence.
Part scientific curiosity, part occult artifact, and part piece of nineteenth-century advertising ephemera, In Your Open Hand captures a fascinating moment when palmistry was presented as a system that could supposedly reveal hidden truths about the individual. Its combination of typography, anatomy, and mysticism makes it an especially distinctive addition to a cabinet of curiosities.
