The Absinthe Drinker depicts two solitary figures seated at a Parisian cafe, absorbed in their own thoughts despite sitting side by side. The woman stares blankly ahead beside a glass of absinthe, while the man looks away in another direction. Degas deliberately avoids the lively, glamorous image of café life, instead presenting a quiet and somewhat bleak moment of urban isolation.

The unusual composition gives the scene the immediacy of a candid snapshot. Tables cut across the foreground at sharp angles, while the figures are pushed toward the right side of the frame, leaving a broad expanse of empty space around them. Muted browns, grays, and ochres reinforce the somber mood, while the large mirror behind the figures expands the cramped café interior.

Painted in the mid-1870s, the work reflects Degas’s fascination with modern Paris and its inhabitants. Rather than idealizing his subjects, he observed the psychological realities of contemporary city life (boredom, fatigue, and alienation) with remarkable directness. The result is one of the most memorable café scenes of the Impressionist era.
