Jacques-Louis David’s The Coronation of Napoleon captures one of the most celebrated ceremonies of the Napoleonic era: the coronation of Napoleon Bonaparte as Emperor of the French at Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris on December 2, 1804. Rather than depicting Napoleon receiving the crown himself, David shows him crowning his wife, Joséphine, as she kneels before him.
