Théodore Géricault’s The Raft of the Medusa is one of the defining masterpieces of French Romanticism. The monumental painting depicts the survivors of the French frigate Méduse, which ran aground off the coast of West Africa in 1816, leaving more than a hundred people stranded on a makeshift raft.
