Ivan Aivazovsky’s The Ninth Wave is one of the most celebrated seascapes of nineteenth-century Romanticism, depicting survivors clinging to the remains of a shipwreck after a devastating storm. A massive wave rises before them as the sea begins to calm beneath the glow of the rising sun.
