Raphael’s The Sistine Madonna, painted around 1513-1514, presents the Virgin Mary carrying the Christ Child as they appear to emerge from behind a pair of parted green curtains. She is accompanied by Saint Sixtus and Saint Barbara, while two famously contemplative cherubs rest at the bottom of the composition. The monumental arrangement gives the painting an almost theatrical sense of revelation, as though the sacred figures are stepping directly into the viewer’s space.
