Raphael’s The Transfiguration, painted between 1516 and 1520, is a monumental vision of Christ’s divinity and one of the defining masterpieces of the High Renaissance. The upper portion depicts Christ transfigured on Mount Tabor, radiant in white as Moses and Elijah appear beside him, while Saints Peter, James, and John react below. Beneath this celestial revelation, Raphael presents the dramatic scene of a possessed boy being brought to the apostles, creating a striking contrast between divine illumination above and human suffering below.

The painting was commissioned for the cathedral of Narbonne and was one of Raphael’s final works, completed shortly before his death in 1520. Its ambitious composition combines serene idealism with intense movement and emotion: the apostles gesture urgently toward the afflicted child, while the figures on the mountain respond with awe to Christ’s appearance. The brilliant contrast between the luminous upper scene and the darker, turbulent lower half gives The Transfiguration an extraordinary sense of spiritual and psychological drama.
