The Feast of the Gods – Giovanni Bellini and Titian (c. 1514-29) – Renaissance Canvas Print

The Feast of the Gods, begun by Giovanni Bellini around 1514 and substantially reworked by Titian in 1529, presents a lively gathering of classical deities enjoying a woodland feast. The gods lounge beneath towering trees, drinking, eating, and relaxing amid an idyllic landscape, while servants and attendants move among them. The scene is drawn from Ovid’s Fasti, giving the painting a playful glimpse into the private lives and earthly pleasures of the ancient gods.

The painting is especially notable for the collaboration between two generations of Venetian masters. Bellini established the original composition, while Titian later transformed the landscape and repainted several figures, introducing the richer colors, atmospheric effects, and vigorous naturalism associated with his mature style. The monumental trees, distant mountains, rustic architecture, and brilliant costumes create a convincing yet fantastical vision of the classical world.

A celebrated masterpiece of the Venetian Renaissance, The Feast of the Gods combines mythology, landscape, and sumptuous color in a scene that feels both grand and remarkably human. Its relaxed atmosphere and richly detailed setting make it an elegant choice for collections featuring Renaissance art, classical mythology, Venetian painting, Giovanni Bellini, Titian, and masterpieces inspired by the ancient world.
