This decorative composition by French artist E. A. Séguy comes from Compositions dans le goût oriental, a collection of pochoir prints exploring stylized floral and ornamental motifs inspired by Eastern decorative traditions. Séguy was renowned for his highly detailed botanical and decorative designs, created during the transition from Art Nouveau toward the more geometric aesthetic that would define Art Deco. The pochoir technique, in which colors were applied through carefully cut stencils, allowed him to achieve the rich, tactile appearance characteristic of his work.
Against a deep blue-black ground, three fantastical flowers with turquoise-green centers and curling white petals emerge among a field of elongated golden stems and flame-like blossoms. The limited palette of black, gold, orange, turquoise, and white gives the composition a dramatic, jewel-like quality, while the rhythmic repetition of the botanical forms creates an almost textile-like pattern. Its combination of exotic influence, stylized flora, and bold decorative geometry makes it a striking example of early 20th-century French decorative art.
