Designed by Dutch artist Richard Roland Holst in 1919, this commemorative vignette demonstrates his distinctive approach to graphic design, in which symbolism, typography, and geometric ornament are brought together within a tightly ordered composition. Holst was an important figure in Dutch decorative art, and his work frequently combined traditional allegorical imagery with the simplified forms and strong linear structure associated with early modern design.
A stylized female figure with flowing hair occupies the center, framed by an angular diamond-shaped border and surrounded by carefully integrated lettering. The figure’s hair and wings create a sense of movement against the otherwise rigid geometry, while the bold black-and-white treatment gives the design an especially graphic quality. Concentric circles, pointed arches, and repeating linear motifs reinforce the symmetry of the composition, creating an elegant example of early 20th-century Dutch decorative art with strong Art Deco appeal.
