For United America, YWCA Division for Foreign Born Women – C. Howard Walker (1919) – Patriotic Poster Print

Created in 1919 for the Young Women’s Christian Association, C. Howard Walker’s For United America was aimed at foreign-born women in the United States. The poster reflects the YWCA’s wartime and postwar work with immigrant communities, using the idea of a united America to encourage women from diverse national backgrounds to participate in American civic life. Rather than depicting the United States as a single cultural tradition, Walker builds his composition around the many national identities that made up the country’s immigrant population.

A central female figure holds aloft two elaborate standards surrounded by dozens of shields bearing national flags, with the American flag occupying the prominent position directly above her. The flags represent countries from across Europe, the Americas, and Asia, arranged around the figure like a colorful heraldic display. Rich blue, red, gold, and green give the lithograph an almost medieval decorative character, while the symmetrical arrangement and ornate eagle-topped standards create a strong sense of unity and order. The result is a fascinating example of early 20th-century American poster art that combines patriotic symbolism with imagery of immigration, suggesting a national identity formed from many different origins.
