Patriotic League – Howard Chandler Christy (1918) – Patriotic WWI Poster Print

Howard Chandler Christy’s Patriotic League was created in 1918 as a patriotic recruitment and membership poster, using the artist’s signature idealized style to appeal to American women during World War I. Christy was one of the era’s most successful American illustrators, particularly famous for his elegant depictions of the modern American woman. Here, that “Christy Girl” becomes a patriotic figure, posed confidently before a large American flag while holding a ceremonial staff.

The woman’s fashionable appearance and poised expression give the composition a distinctly glamorous character, while the sweeping flag behind her provides an unmistakable patriotic backdrop. Christy’s delicate handling of the figure contrasts with the bold blue headline and the large geometric triangular emblem at right, creating a balance between commercial illustration and graphic design. The limited red, white, and blue palette reinforces the national theme without overwhelming the central figure.
