Frederick Childe Hassam’s The Avenue in the Rain was painted in 1917, during a period when the artist increasingly turned his attention to American flags and patriotic imagery. Part of Hassam’s celebrated Flags series, the painting captures a rain-soaked city avenue transformed by the display of American flags. Rather than presenting patriotism through military action or political symbolism, Hassam approaches the subject as a study of light, atmosphere, color, and modern urban life.

The flags dominate the composition, their red and white stripes and fields of blue dissolving into the shimmering, rain-softened streets and architecture beyond. Hassam uses short, energetic brushstrokes to suggest reflections, wet pavement, falling rain, and the movement of pedestrians, allowing the flags to become almost abstract fields of color within the atmospheric scene. The cool blue-gray environment makes the vivid red, white, and blue banners particularly luminous, while the loose Impressionist technique gives the entire painting a sense of movement and fleeting light. The result is one of Hassam’s most recognizable patriotic works, combining the visual language of American Impressionism with the powerful symbolism of the flag.
