The Flags of the Union – George Franklin Cram and Eugene Murray-Aaron (1901) – Patriotic Poster Print

The Flags of the Union is a richly illustrated 1901 study of the many flags and ensigns associated with the United States, created by cartographer and publisher George Franklin Cram with Eugene Murray-Aaron. Rather than presenting the American flag in isolation, the work explores the broader visual language of American maritime, military, civic, and historical flags. Its central message, “One Flag, One Cause, One Country,” reflects the period’s strong emphasis on national unity while the accompanying text provides explanations of the various flags and their uses.

An American eagle spreads its wings above a dramatic arrangement of flags, with the national flag occupying the most prominent position at the top. Surrounding it are standards identified with the President, Navy, Army, admirals, warships, colonial America, quarantine, liberty, and other organizations and historical symbols. The numerous flags create an almost heraldic composition, with vivid reds, blues, whites, and greens set against a pale blue ground. Small illustrations and inscriptions encourage the viewer to examine the individual banners, making the work as much an educational reference as a patriotic image. Its combination of historical information, decorative illustration, and early-20th-century American symbolism makes it a particularly fascinating piece of vintage Americana.
