A solitary soldier crouches in a trench, looking back over his shoulder while gripping a hand grenade. Barbed wire and rough earthworks fill the background, while the restricted palette of ochre, olive green, black, and vivid yellow creates a tense, almost claustrophobic atmosphere. The soldier’s enlarged figure and low viewpoint give him a monumental presence, while the oversized white lettering of Und Ihr? provides a stark graphic counterpoint to the densely worked illustration. The result is a particularly powerful example of Austrian World War I poster art, using the visual language of the battlefield to make the viewer feel personally implicated in the war-loan campaign.
