James Montgomery Flagg’s Wake Up, America! Civilization Calls Every Man, Woman and Child! was created in 1917 as an American World War I poster calling on civilians to participate in the national war effort. Flagg, one of the most prominent American illustrators of the period, was particularly skilled at combining expressive figures with direct, highly readable graphic design. Here, his appeal is aimed not only at soldiers but at the entire population, presenting the war as a collective responsibility involving “every man, woman and child.”

A sleeping young woman, wrapped in a red, white, and blue blanket and wearing a patriotic headpiece, occupies the center of the composition. Behind her, dark clouds and a distant battlefield suggest the threat that the poster urges Americans to awaken to, while the bold yellow-and-white lettering gives the design the commanding appearance of a newspaper headline. The restrained red, white, blue, and yellow palette and Flagg’s expressive commercial-illustration style make the image immediately accessible while retaining considerable visual drama.
