This striking NASA concept imagines what a future human expedition to Mars might look like, with astronauts, rovers, habitation modules, scientific equipment, greenhouses, communications antennas, and other infrastructure spread across the Martian landscape. The scene was created by space artist Pat Rawlings and depicts a possible exploration base near Pavonis Mons, one of Mars’s enormous equatorial shield volcanoes. Although the image is commonly dated 2005 because of its NASA publication and digitization, the original artwork dates to 1985, making it an especially interesting example of how NASA and aerospace artists envisioned human Mars exploration decades before such a mission could be attempted.
The panoramic scene presents Mars as a place of sustained human activity rather than a brief landing: astronauts work alongside pressurized vehicles, surface laboratories, power systems, communications equipment, and what appears to be an aircraft flying overhead. The concept reflects a recurring theme in NASA’s exploration studies: the need for an entire network of transportation, habitation, power, communications, and scientific infrastructure to support humans on another planet. Today, NASA’s Moon to Mars architecture continues to examine many of these same broad requirements as part of long-term plans for human exploration beyond the Moon.
