Astronaut Eugene A. Cernan on the Moon – Apollo 17 Mission – NASA (1972) – Space Age Poster Print

This iconic photograph captures Apollo 17 commander Eugene A. Cernan standing beside the American flag during the final Apollo lunar landing mission in December 1972. Taken by lunar module pilot Harrison H. “Jack” Schmitt at the Taurus-Littrow landing site, the image shows Cernan holding the lower corner of the flag as the Lunar Roving Vehicle sits in the background. Apollo 17 was the final mission of the Apollo program to land astronauts on the Moon, and Cernan would ultimately become the last person to leave footprints on the lunar surface.

Beyond its symbolic imagery, the photograph represents the culmination of an extraordinary period of lunar exploration. Apollo 17 was also the most scientifically ambitious of the lunar landing missions, with Schmitt (the first professional scientist to walk on the Moon) joining Cernan for extensive geological exploration of the Taurus-Littrow valley. The crew spent roughly 75 hours on the lunar surface and returned 110 kilograms of lunar rocks and soil, more than any previous Apollo landing. With the stark lunar landscape, brilliant flag, and deep black sky, the photograph has become one of the defining images of the Space Age and the closing chapter of the first era of human exploration of the Moon.
