This NASA artist’s concept provides a detailed look inside the Apollo 12 Command Module, showing Command Module Pilot Richard F. Gordon Jr. at the controls during the mission’s planned flight around the Moon. Through the window, the Apollo 12 Lunar Module Intrepid can be seen against the lunar surface. Created on November 10, 1969, just days before launch, the illustration offered a visual representation of the spacecraft and crew’s working environment as Apollo 12 prepared to become the second mission to land humans on the Moon.
Apollo 12 was designed to build directly upon the achievement of Apollo 11, with greater emphasis on precision landing and scientific exploration. Gordon remained in lunar orbit aboard the Command and Service Module Yankee Clipper while Commander Charles Conrad Jr. and Lunar Module Pilot Alan L. Bean descended to the Ocean of Storms, where they landed only about 600 feet from the Surveyor 3 spacecraft. The richly rendered interior, with its dense arrays of switches, displays, equipment, and viewing windows, offers a fascinating glimpse into the highly specialized environment from which Apollo astronauts navigated and operated their spacecraft during the lunar missions.
