Pat Rawlings’s Humans on Mars presents an evocative vision of a future human expedition to the Red Planet, created for NASA in 1995. Two astronauts explore the Martian surface near Ganges Chasma, pausing beside a robotic lander and small rover while a larger exploration base and additional vehicles occupy the surrounding landscape. The scene reflects the ambitious Mars-exploration concepts NASA was studying during the 1990s, when engineers and mission planners were increasingly considering how humans might eventually operate on Mars rather than simply sending robotic spacecraft.

The artwork is particularly interesting for the way it portrays Mars exploration as an integrated human-and-robotic operation.
