Inflatable Module for Lunar Base – NASA (1989) – Space Age Canvas Print

This NASA concept from 1989 envisions an inflatable lunar habitat designed to support a permanent human presence on the Moon. Developed through studies at Johnson Space Center, the proposed sixteen-meter-diameter structure could accommodate roughly a dozen astronauts, combining living quarters, laboratories, agricultural areas, exercise facilities, and mission operations within a single expandable habitat. Outside, astronauts work alongside pressurized rovers, solar arrays, and other equipment on the lunar surface.

The concept reflects a period when NASA was moving beyond the short-duration Apollo model and considering what would actually be required to live and work on the Moon for extended periods. Inflatable construction offered a way to transport a relatively compact structure and deploy a much larger interior volume on the lunar surface, while lunar soil could be used as shielding against radiation and micrometeoroids. With its cutaway view revealing multiple levels of laboratories, gardens, crew quarters, and operations areas, the artwork presents lunar exploration not as a series of isolated missions, but as the foundation of a functioning off-world settlement.
