Astronaut Alan Bean on the Moon – Apollo 12 Mission – NASA (1969) – Space Age Poster Print

This striking photograph captures Apollo 12 Lunar Module Pilot Alan L. Bean standing on the lunar surface during the mission’s second extravehicular activity in November 1969. Bean holds a container of lunar soil while his Hasselblad camera is mounted to his chest, and mission commander Charles “Pete” Conrad is reflected in his helmet visor: the two astronauts’ proximity to one another made this intimate view possible. Apollo 12 landed in the Ocean of Storms on November 19, just 600 feet from the robotic Surveyor 3 spacecraft.

Apollo 12 was more than a repeat of the historic Apollo 11 landing: it demonstrated NASA’s growing ability to conduct precise, scientifically focused lunar exploration. Conrad and Bean spent more than 31 hours on the surface, deploying the Apollo Lunar Surface Experiments Package, collecting geological samples, and examining Surveyor 3, whose components were returned to Earth to study the effects of prolonged exposure to the lunar environment. The photograph consequently captures a pivotal moment in the transition from simply reaching the Moon to conducting sustained scientific work there.
