Created around 1900, the design was part of Mucha’s comprehensive scheme for Fouquet’s new boutique on the Rue Royale in Paris. Rather than designing isolated objects, Mucha conceived the interior as a unified environment in which furniture, lighting, sculpture, mirrors, stained glass, and architectural ornament all worked together. The completed interior was installed in 1900 and is now preserved and reconstructed at the Musée Carnavalet, while the surviving drawings offer an unusually detailed glimpse into Mucha’s approach to interior design and the sophisticated decorative ideals of French Art Nouveau.
