Églantier (Wild Rose) from La Plante et ses Applications Ornementales – Maurice Pillard Verneuil (1896) – Art Nouveau Poster Print

Maurice Pillard Verneuil transforms the wild rose into an elaborate study in Art Nouveau ornament in this plate from La Plante et ses Applications Ornementales. Large stylized blossoms and dense foliage form a repeating botanical field, while a sweeping arched motif introduces a second, more delicate interpretation of the plant. Above and below, bands of curling stems, leaves, and flowers create the effect of an ornamental interior or architectural panel. The restrained palette of olive green, pale blue, cream, and warm gold gives the composition an especially sophisticated decorative character.

Published in Paris in 1896 under the direction of Eugène Grasset, La Plante et ses Applications Ornementales presented ornamental interpretations of 24 plant species, with each subject receiving three plates. Verneuil contributed many of the designs, including Plates 67 and 68 devoted to the wild rose (Eglantier); the work as a whole became an important example of the Art Nouveau movement’s effort to develop contemporary ornament from the forms and structures of nature. Verneuil’s designs are particularly notable for turning botanical motifs into patterns suitable for architecture, textiles, wallpapers, and other decorative applications.
