Iris from La Plante et ses Applications Ornementales – Maurice Pillard Verneuil (1896) – Art Nouveau Poster Print

Maurice Pillard Verneuil transforms the iris into a remarkably sophisticated exercise in Art Nouveau pattern design in this second plate devoted to the flower. The composition juxtaposes three distinct treatments: a tall, sinuous iris motif at left, a repeating pattern of stylized blossoms and curling stems at right, and a horizontal border in which blue iris flowers rise from an undulating bed of foliage. The combination of botanical forms, rhythmic repetition, and carefully balanced color demonstrates how Verneuil could move seamlessly between natural observation and highly organized decorative design.

The plate belongs to La Plante et ses Applications Ornementales, directed by Eugene Grasset and published in Paris in 1896. The influential portfolio examined 24 plant species, presenting each through botanical studies and ornamental interpretations; Verneuil was responsible for most of the illustrations. His iris designs exemplify the book’s central idea: that artists could study nature closely and then transform its forms into original contemporary ornament rather than simply copying historical decorative styles. The result became an important contribution to the development of French Art Nouveau design.
