The New York Recorder – G. F. Scotson-Clark (1895) – Art Nouveau Poster Print

George Frederick Scotson-Clark’s The New York Recorder is a wonderfully exuberant example of American poster design from the 1890s. A fashionably dressed woman in a flowing red gown rides a bicycle through a stylized landscape, her enormous dress and red hat providing a dramatic counterpoint to the cool blue-green surroundings. The simplified forms, strong outlines, flat areas of color, and emphasis on the sweeping silhouette give the composition the unmistakable graphic character of the era’s emerging Art Nouveau poster aesthetic. The Library of Congress dates the poster to 1895 and identifies Scotson-Clark as its artist.

The advertisement promoted The New York Recorder, with the text specifically highlighting the newspaper’s coverage of the “Great Cycle Show” at Madison Square Garden. Bicycle culture was booming in the 1890s, and the poster cleverly combines that contemporary enthusiasm with the fashionable “new woman” imagery frequently used in period advertising. Scotson-Clark, an English-born artist who worked extensively in American newspaper and magazine illustration, produced a number of striking posters during this period. The result here is both a vivid advertisement and an excellent snapshot of the bicycle craze and visual culture of fin-de-siècle New York.
