Rome via the Mont-Cenis Route – Géo Dorival (1920) – Vintage Travel Poster Print

Geo Dorival’s Rome par la voie du Mont-Cenis presents the ancient capital through a dramatic, sunlit view of the Roman Forum. Massive Corinthian columns dominate the foreground, framing a sweeping vista of temples, ruins, and archaeological remains extending toward the Colosseum in the distance. Dorival’s warm oranges, ochres, and muted blues give the scene a luminous, almost painterly atmosphere, while the monumental scale of the architecture makes the ancient city feel both imposing and inviting. The Library of Congress identifies Dorival as the artist and dates the poster to around 1920, describing it as a view of the Roman Forum at dawn.

The poster was created for the Paris-Lyon-Mediterranee (PLM) railway, advertising the journey to Rome via the Mont-Cenis route through the French Alps and northern Italy. Rather than simply depicting the railway itself, Dorival sells the destination through one of Rome’s most evocative archaeological landscapes, transforming the ruins of antiquity into an aspirational travel experience. The striking typography and carefully composed architectural perspective are characteristic of French railway posters of the period, which turned destinations throughout France and Europe into highly stylized visions of travel and discovery.
