Frank S. Nicholson’s Discover Puerto Rico U.S.A. presents the island through a richly stylized vision of tropical color and cultural identity. A magnificent blue-purple tropical flower dominates the foreground, framed by sweeping palms and a vividly rendered landscape of green foliage, turquoise water, and coral-colored architecture. Beyond the flowers, a white sailboat crosses the harbor, while a distinctive lighthouse and waterfront buildings evoke Puerto Rico’s coastal character. The intense palette and simplified organic forms give the composition a distinctly modern graphic quality, while the elegant script lettering reinforces its role as a destination poster. The poster was produced by the New York City WPA Art Project during the late 1930s, placing it within the remarkable body of federally sponsored American graphic art created under the Works Progress Administration.
The phrase “Where the Americas Meet” reflects the poster’s emphasis on Puerto Rico as a meeting point of North American, Caribbean, and Latin American cultures. Nicholson combines botanical imagery, sailing, architecture, and tropical scenery rather than focusing on a single landmark, creating an overall impression of the island as an exotic but accessible American destination. The WPA-era travel posters were designed to encourage tourism and showcase places within the United States and its territories through bold, highly modern compositions; Discover Puerto Rico is particularly effective in translating that mission into an exuberant celebration of Puerto Rico’s landscape and visual culture.
