Frederic Kimball Mizen’s Fifth Avenue, New York captures Manhattan at the dawn of the skyscraper age, looking down the canyon of Fifth Avenue toward the newly completed Empire State Building. The towering buildings, crowded sidewalks, automobiles, buses, and rows of American flags create a remarkably vivid portrait of New York in 1932. Mizen uses the vertical architecture to funnel the eye toward the Empire State Building, whose monumental presence dominates the distant skyline. The warm, slightly atmospheric palette and painterly treatment give the bustling commercial district an almost cinematic quality, while the bold red border and period typography complete the polished appearance of a classic railway poster.
The poster was part of the Travel by Train campaign, a cooperative effort involving roughly 30 American railroads that sought to promote rail travel during the growing popularity of the automobile. Its timing is especially significant: the Empire State Building had opened in May 1931, and this poster is believed to be among its earliest appearances in a travel advertisement. Mizen’s depiction is not intended as a strictly accurate architectural rendering. Instead, it heightens the vertical drama of Fifth Avenue and turns the street into a spectacular gateway to modern New York. The result is both a destination advertisement and a fascinating visual record of how the city presented itself at the beginning of the 1930s.
