Vittorio Grassi’s Assisi presents the Umbrian hill town through an ingenious architectural frame, as though the viewer were looking out from a high medieval tower. The Basilica of Saint Francis occupies the center of the composition, its warm terracotta roofs and pale stonework standing out against the deep blue border, while the Umbrian countryside stretches into the distance in a remarkable patchwork of fields, roads, villages, and hills. Above the landscape, a great golden semicircle creates the impression of a rising sun or illuminated architectural opening, giving the otherwise carefully observed scene an almost dreamlike quality.
The design was produced for the Ente Nazionale per le Industrie Turistiche (ENIT), Italy’s national tourism organization, which was established in 1919 and quickly began using sophisticated poster art to promote Italy’s cultural destinations. Grassi’s composition is particularly effective because it combines Assisi’s religious and architectural significance with the broader beauty of its landscape: the Basilica is the focal point, but the countryside surrounding it receives almost equal attention.
