Maurice Logan’s Shasta Route Through the Shasta-Cascade Wonderland Region captures the drama of the American West through a powerful combination of mountain scenery and railroad machinery. A massive Southern Pacific locomotive dominates the foreground as it moves through rolling hills and evergreen country toward the snow-covered summit of Mount Shasta. Logan contrasts the dark, intricately rendered engine with a luminous landscape of pale greens, lavender shadows, and brilliant white snow, creating a composition that conveys both the immense power of the locomotive and the grandeur of the wilderness surrounding it.
