Rocco D. Navigato’s Chicago Temple presents one of Chicago’s most remarkable architectural landmarks in a dramatic composition of towering Gothic forms and glowing color. The 568-foot Chicago Temple rises above the surrounding Loop buildings, its elaborate Neo-Gothic façade and extraordinarily tall spire illuminated in brilliant gold and rose against a deep blue sky. Streetcars, automobiles, and pedestrians animate the streets below, emphasizing the contrast between the monumental church and the rapidly developing metropolis around it. Navigato’s simplified architecture, strong vertical lines, and jewel-like palette give the scene an almost theatrical quality, transforming the building into a luminous symbol of 1920s Chicago.
Completed in 1924 at 77 West Washington Street, the Chicago Temple was designed by the architectural firm Holabird & Roche for the First United Methodist Church of Chicago. The combination of church and skyscraper was highly unusual: the Neo-Gothic structure incorporated worship space, offices, and a soaring spire, and at 568 feet it was the tallest building in Chicago when completed. The Chicago Rapid Transit Company used posters like Navigato’s to promote destinations accessible through Chicago’s growing elevated and rapid-transit network, turning notable buildings and attractions into colorful invitations to explore the city.
