Moriz Jung’s Rainbow Obstacle is a wonderfully eccentric example of early 20th-century graphic art, depicting a fantastical aviation mishap unfolding beneath an enormous rainbow. A primitive monoplane tumbles through the sky as its pilot is thrown into the air, while a figure on the ground looks on with a camera in hand. Jung’s bold black outlines, saturated turquoise, yellow, red, and green, and deliberately flattened forms give the scene the playful, almost comic-book quality characteristic of his illustrations for the Wiener Werkstatte.
Created in 1911, the work belongs to Jung’s celebrated series of satirical postcards depicting the new and often precarious world of early aviation. Rather than treating flight as a symbol of technological progress alone, Jung turned contemporary fascination with airplanes into absurd visual comedy, exaggerating the dangers and improbable adventures of the pioneering machines. Rainbow Obstacle was published by the Wiener Werkstatte as postcard no. 342, part of a series that has become particularly admired for its inventive combination of Viennese modernism, humor, and graphic design.
