Kleine Dada Soirée (Small Dada Evening) – Theo van Doesburg and Kurt Schwitters (1922) – Vintage Lithograph Poster Print

Kleine Dada Soiree (Small Dada Evening) is a wonderfully chaotic piece of Dada graphic design, in which words, letters, slogans, arrows, illustrations, and fragments of text collide across the page. Bold red repetitions of “DADA” slash diagonally through the composition, while black typography shifts direction and scale with almost complete disregard for conventional hierarchy. Small motifs (a pointing hand, arrow, deer, and other fragments) are scattered among multilingual slogans, creating the visual impression of a printed collage assembled in deliberate defiance of order and convention.

Designed by Theo van Doesburg and Kurt Schwitters in 1922, the poster promoted the pair’s Dada campaign through the Netherlands, a series of lectures and performances intended to introduce Dada to Dutch audiences. The program included ragtime music by Erik Satie, abstract poetry performed by Schwitters, and van Doesburg’s “Dadasofie.” Its deliberately disorienting typography perfectly reflects Dada’s embrace of absurdity, experimentation, and anti-traditional artistic expression. Today, Kleine Dada Soiree is recognized as an important example of avant-garde typography and early 20th-century modernist graphic design, held in collections including the National Gallery of Art and Museum of Modern Art.
