Furniture Broadside – Joseph Meeks & Sons (1833) – Vintage Lithograph Poster Print

This remarkable 1833 furniture broadside presents the products of New York cabinetmakers Joseph Meeks & Sons in an extraordinary grid of finely detailed furniture designs. Dozens of tables, chairs, sofas, cabinets, desks, dressing furniture, and other pieces surround an illustration of the company’s Broad Street showroom, while each design is individually numbered for easy reference. The hand-colored illustrations capture the elaborate forms and rich ornament of early American Empire furniture, making the sheet both a commercial advertisement and a fascinating visual record of 19th-century interior design.

Published in New York by Endicott & Swett, the broadside functioned as a practical furniture catalog, allowing customers to identify pieces by their numbered designs and prices. Joseph Meeks & Sons operated at 43 and 45 Broad Street, and the firm’s 1833 advertisement is regarded as an important document in the development of American furniture design during the period. Its combination of typography, architectural illustration, decorative furniture designs, and historical commercial ephemera makes this an especially distinctive example of vintage American graphic art.
