Dancing Nymph (Nymphe Danseuse) – Walter Crane (1895) – Art Nouveau Poster Print

Walter Crane’s Dancing Nymph (Nymphe Danseuse) combines classical subject matter with the sinuous line and decorative sensibility that would become central to late-19th-century Art Nouveau. A graceful female figure sweeps across the composition in a seemingly weightless dance, her flowing hair and billowing dress echoing the curling branches and dense foliage behind her. Crane’s extraordinarily fine black linework gives the entire scene a rhythmic quality, turning the figure, vegetation, and flowing fabric into one interconnected pattern.

Published in Paris in 1895 as part of L’Estampe originale, Album IX, the lithograph reflects Crane’s longstanding interest in classical mythology, medieval art, and the decorative arts. The work was published by Andre Marty, whose L’Estampe originale portfolios brought together prints by leading artists of the European avant-garde. Crane’s combination of elongated figures, organic forms, intricate pattern, and expressive contour places the image at an especially interesting intersection of the British Arts and Crafts movement, the Aesthetic movement, and the emerging Art Nouveau.
