Moriz Jung’s Variety Act 11: Mac Bull from Philadelphia in His Frightful Loop-the-Loop Ride in His Car is a wonderfully absurd vision of early automotive spectacle. A tiny automobile races upside down through a gigantic rainbow, while a stylized countryside unfolds beneath it in bold fields of blue, yellow, green, red, and black. Jung surrounds the central scene with an elaborate ornamental border and integrates the typography directly into the design, creating the sense of a fantastical vaudeville poster rather than a conventional advertisement. The deliberately crude perspective and vivid color blocks give the image a wonderfully playful Wiener Werkstatte character.
Created in 1907, the work was part of Jung’s series of twelve Varietenummer postcards depicting imaginary vaudeville acts and spectacular performers. The joke here is presented as an outrageous automotive stunt: “Mac Bull” supposedly performs a terrifying loop-the-loop in his automobile, with the fictional vehicle and tire brands adding another layer of commercial parody. The Metropolitan Museum of Art identifies the work as postcard no. 93 of the Wiener Werkstatte series and credits Jung as the artist and the Wiener Werkstatte as publisher. The series captures the period’s fascination with new technology, speed, spectacle, and modern graphic design while deliberately blurring the line between advertising and fantasy.
