Currier & Ives’ Clipper Ship Three Brothers presents the famous vessel at full sail, its towering masts and immense spread of canvas dominating a restless sea beneath a luminous sky. The carefully rendered rigging, billowing sails, and bustling deck convey both the extraordinary scale of the ship and the speed for which American clippers were celebrated. With its dramatic composition and rich hand-colored palette, the image exemplifies the romantic appeal of 19th-century American marine prints.
Published in 1875, the print depicts the Three Brothers, a 2,972-ton vessel originally built in New York in 1855 as the steamship Vanderbilt. After service with the U.S. government during the Civil War, the ship was sold to San Francisco merchants, converted to a full-rigged sailing ship, and renamed Three Brothers. Currier & Ives promoted it as “the largest sailing ship in the world”. The vessel’s enormous size and reputation for speed made it an especially compelling subject for the firm’s popular prints celebrating American maritime achievement.
