Avebury, Landscape of the Megaliths – Paul Nash (1937) – Vintage Lithograph Canvas Print

Paul Nash’s Avebury transforms the ancient landscape of Wiltshire into a dreamlike vision of monumental stones, cultivated fields, and strange, almost otherworldly forms. The great standing stones dominate the composition like mysterious sentinels, their irregular surfaces set against rolling fields and a luminous sky. Nash’s loose, expressive lines and muted palette of ochre, blue, green, and rose give the landscape an unsettled, visionary quality, hovering between observation and Surrealism.

Created in 1937, the work reflects Nash’s fascination with the ancient landscape around Avebury and his belief that prehistoric monuments could possess a powerful, almost supernatural presence. Rather than treating the stones simply as archaeological relics, he transformed them into abstract forms whose shapes and relationships with the surrounding landscape suggested what he called a kind of “super-reality.” The image was produced as a color lithograph and published by Contemporary Lithographs Ltd., making it an especially interesting example of Nash’s modernist approach to the English landscape and his exploration of ancient places through Surrealist imagery.
