The Promenade (Landscape with Cypresses) – Henri-Edmond Cross (1897) – Impressionist Canvas Print

Henri-Edmond Cross’s The Promenade (Landscape with Cypresses) is a luminous vision of the Mediterranean coast, where figures, vegetation, water, and sky dissolve into a shimmering field of color. Four women stroll among tall, dark cypresses on a sunlit hillside, while sailboats drift across the blue water in the distance. Cross builds the scene from countless small touches of blue, green, yellow, and white, giving the landscape a vibrant, almost mosaic-like surface. The vertical cypresses provide a strong rhythmic structure, balancing the horizontal sweep of the coastline and sea.

Created in 1897, the work reflects Cross’s mature Neo-Impressionist style after his move to Saint-Clair in the south of France. Influenced by Georges Seurat and Paul Signac, Cross used carefully separated touches of color to create luminous effects while increasingly simplifying and stylizing the forms of the landscape. The Cleveland Museum of Art notes that the sensuous cypresses and circular arrangement of figures also recall Japanese color woodcuts and the decorative qualities of Art Nouveau, making the work an especially interesting bridge between Neo-Impressionism and the emerging modernist aesthetic. The image is a color lithograph on chine colle.
