This extraordinary astronomical plate from Johann Georg Heck’s Bilder-Atlas zum Conversations-Lexikon brings together an entire vocabulary of 19th-century celestial science in a single intricate composition. At its center is a large armillary sphere surrounded by diagrams illustrating the movements and relationships of the Earth, Sun, and Moon, while additional figures explain eclipses, conjunctions, celestial coordinates, horizons, meridians, and the apparent paths of heavenly bodies. The finely engraved lines and dense geometric constructions give the plate an almost architectural quality, transforming complex astronomical concepts into an elaborate work of scientific graphic design.

Published by F. A. Brockhaus in Leipzig as part of the first edition of the Bilder-Atlas beginning in 1849, the plate exemplifies the ambitious purpose of the atlas: to create a visual encyclopedia of contemporary scientific and cultural knowledge. Johann Georg Heck conceived the Bilder-Atlas as an illustrated companion to the Brockhaus encyclopedia, assembling hundreds of detailed plates covering mathematics, natural science, geography, history, technology, and the arts. The combination of astronomical instruments, celestial diagrams, mathematical geometry, and meticulous engraving makes this an especially compelling piece of Victorian scientific illustration.
