Charles Martin’s La Femme a l’Emeraude presents a vision of 1920s fashion as an elegant, almost dreamlike spectacle. A poised woman in a luxurious tiger-patterned coat stands amid sweeping tropical foliage, her elongated silhouette and dramatic fur collar contrasted against a muted taupe sky. A jeweled green accent at her waist and the restrained touches of pink, green, and cream throughout the composition create a sophisticated palette, while the oversized leaves and stylized blossoms transform the natural setting into a decorative frame for the fashion figure.
Created for the fifth issue of Gazette du Bon Ton in 1923, the illustration exemplifies the refined pochoir aesthetic of French Art Deco fashion publishing. Martin combines flattened perspective, simplified botanical forms, elongated proportions, and carefully controlled color into a composition that feels both luxurious and highly graphic. The coat was designed by Max-Leroy, while Martin created the illustration, a distinction reflected in the original caption. The Rijksmuseum identifies it as Plate 23 of the 1923 issue.
