In The Yerres, Effect of Rain, Gustave Caillebotte turns an ordinary rainy day into a remarkably atmospheric study of water, reflection, and changing light. The scene depicts the Yerres River on the grounds of the Caillebotte family estate, with the rain itself becoming the painting’s central subject. Rather than focusing on people or activity, Caillebotte invites the viewer to pause and observe the subtle transformation of the landscape after a shower.

The composition is unusually quiet. A wooded bank occupies the upper half of the painting, its trees softened and partially obscured by damp air and rain. Below, the river becomes almost a second landscape, reflecting the trunks, foliage, and pale sky in broken vertical streaks. The circular ripples scattered across its surface are especially effective: each one records an individual raindrop, giving the otherwise still scene a sense of constant, almost imperceptible movement.

Caillebotte’s treatment of perspective is also characteristic. The low viewpoint places the viewer immediately beside the water, while the diagonal riverbank draws the eye deep into the scene. The muted greens, grays, and browns reinforce the cool, damp atmosphere, while small touches of reflected light keep the surface from becoming flat.
