Painted in 1865, Bazille and Camille (Study for Dejeuner sur l’Herbe) offers a rare glimpse into Claude Monet’s early development as an Impressionist. The work depicts Monet’s close friend, fellow painter Frederic Bazille, walking alongside Camille Doncieux, who would later become Monet’s wife. Set within a sun-dappled woodland, the scene captures a moment of quiet movement, rendered with loose, exploratory brushwork that hints at the revolutionary direction Monet’s art would soon take.
This study was created as part of Monet’s preparations for his ambitious Dejeuner sur l’Herbe, a monumental project inspired by Manet’s controversial composition. In contrast to the finished works Monet would later become famous for, this painting feels intimate and immediate – an artist thinking aloud on canvas. The interplay of soft greens, muted blues, and earthy browns conveys both the atmosphere of the forest and the experimental energy of a young painter pushing beyond academic tradition.
