Edward Penfield’s elegant advertisement for Harper’s New Monthly Magazine captures the playful graphic style that helped define American poster design in the 1890s. Created for the March 1895 issue, the composition depicts a stylish woman caught in a gust of wind alongside a March hare, with the magazine itself tumbling through the scene. Penfield reduces the figures to graceful outlines and broad areas of muted color, creating a sense of movement with remarkably economical means.
Penfield’s Harper’s posters were celebrated during the era’s “Poster Craze,” and his distinctive approach drew on Japanese ukiyo-e as well as contemporary European poster design. Rather than filling the image with detail, he relied on bold silhouettes, expressive poses, and carefully balanced negative space: qualities that would become hallmarks of American graphic design. The whimsical March imagery and refined figure give this work an especially charming example of the sophisticated commercial art emerging at the turn of the century.
