James Fuller Queen’s Apollo Belvidere, Study Showing the Forehead, Eyes, and Bridge of Nose isolates the expressive power of the classical figure through an extraordinarily close study of the face. The Apollo Belvedere’s eyes, brows, forehead, and flowing hair emerge gradually from delicate graphite-like shading, with one side of the face dissolving almost entirely into the surrounding paper. The restrained composition and subtle modeling give the fragment an atmospheric quality, transforming a study of ancient sculpture into a quietly evocative work of 19th-century American graphic art.

Queen drew inspiration from the celebrated Apollo Belvedere, the ancient marble sculpture that had become one of the most influential models of classical beauty in European and American art. The Library of Congress identifies Queen as the artist and catalogs this impression as a lithograph dating to between 1840 and 1850; its title was devised by Library staff. The image was preserved in the file of James F. Queen and belongs to the Library’s Popular Graphic Arts collection. Queen was a Philadelphia artist and lithographer whose work included architectural views, advertisements, historical subjects, and studies of figures and sculpture.
